Dolphi

Dolphi (homo tursiops)

When humanity left Terra for the stars they did not leave alone. With them came various plants and animals. Among those animals were dolphins. As the Exodus dragged on and on, human scientists continued to try and communicate with the dolphins. By the time the Exodus was over, the many dolphins aboard the ships had evolved beyond their normal state. It didn't take long for humanity to rename these more advanced dolphins the dolphi. The dolphi are a species still in the early stages of development. Most dolphi look like any other dolphin with a slightly larger brainpan than normal. Some dolphi, however, have begun to react to something in the oceans. These "mutants" have strange abilities and alterations, such as tentacles or the ability to split their tail into legs.

Dolphi City-States

Dolphi- being one of the only intelligent, air breathing, aquatic races- have a special living arrangement. There are a few who use special breathing suits. Most of these allow extended sub aquatic breathing. Others allow overland movement, while keeping the dolphi properly hydrated. These land-based suits can have legs, wheels, treads, or even limited hover capability. More advanced models also include manipulatory appendages. Some coastal cities have dolphi neighborhoods, where the streets are canals and much is underwater. Some lakes in xeno-friendly nations have dolphi colonies built within them.

Most common are the dolphi cities in the world's major oceans. Some of these are static, and considered part of the nearest nation. Other dolphi cities float, in more than one sense of the word. These aquatic city-states hold none other as their sovereign. They self govern and travel the world as fate and the ocean currents will.

It is hard to talk in general terms about these roving nations. Each has its own government, different naming conventions, and different views on everything from magic to culture. There are even different layouts and architecture depending on which city-state one visits. Some dolphi city-states have buildings that stretch above the ocean's surface, allowing non-aquatic beings to live among the more common dolphi citizenry. What little these regions have in common is what is dictated by the limitations of the city-state itself. Sciences that are not easily adaptable to underwater research tend to lack while those that are aided by water tend to flourish.

The exact number of dolphi city-states is currently not known, but estimated to be around 30-50. This number changes as new cities form, old cities disband, and other city-states join together as one.
