Yikari (homo grunniens)

When humanity found its way to New Earth, it was seemingly uninhabited. Other than the Nerthers, who were in fact humans themselves, there seemed to be no sentient life on the planet. It was not until the Second Empire, when a group of exiles left for the far north, that the Yikari were discovered. Yikari are best described as yak men. They are native the the north and were still in a basic tribal state when they were found. Since they have been discovered, they have had the opportunity to integrate with the greater society on the planet. However a small group have been given a commune in the Northern Reaches, where they maintain their original lifestyle, actively distancing themselves from the scientific and social advances of the modern day in favor of a more spiritual and tribal existence.

Yikari have strong social strictures. Upon violation, the offender is typically stripped of all possesions, and exiled from Yikari society. Because of the deep psionic connections within a Yikari social group, this can have devastating psychological effects and result in severe personality disorders, as well as abject poverty.

There is widespread acceptance and use of psionics among the Yikari. Young Yikari receive extensive training from family members in their home, as well as formal schooling.
